As you may have noticed, Pirate101 has some awesome Shark Week Facts on their page. Here are five more!
Shark Week was first started by Discovery Channel in 1987. Discovery wanted to give people more knowledge about sharks and give sharks the respect that they deserve.
Sharks aren't as dangerous as you might think! According to National Geographic, "Each year there are about 50 to 70 confirmed shark attacks and 5 to 15 shark-attack fatalities around the world. The numbers have risen over the past several decades but not because sharks are more aggressive: Humans have simply taken to coastal waters in increasing numbers."
The whale shark is big, but the largest species ever, which has been extinct for a very long time now (nearly 1.5 million years ago), was the Megalodon. Click on the picture to get a size comparison next to a Great White. The dark grey shark is the estimate for the smallest a Megalodon could be, while the black shark is the estimate of how big the Megalodon could get. And note the itsy-bitsy diver in the upper-left corner!
The Megalodon mostly ate whales and other large marine animals, but sometimes ate each other! They went extinct when there were too many sharks and not enough food. This is my personal favorite kind of shark!

Sharks were an important part of ancient Maya culture. There was even a Maya queen who was named Lady Shark. She was one of the most powerful and influential women in all of Mayan culture. Girl power!
Xoc (pronounced "shok") is the Maya word for shark, and shark teeth were used for weapons.

Our very own Fin Dorsal, who is one of the first bosses we fight, is based off a real-life person: Vin Diesel! Vin is a famous actor, known for his roles in Saving Private Ryan and The Fast and the Furious movies.
Fin's recurring "I want you to remember this moment, pirate" quote is from The Chronicles of Riddick, where Vin was the main character. This movie is also from where Fin gets his physical appearance. See the similarity?
